A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
